A Safer Way to Remove Plaque

If you’re suffering from a blocked carotid artery, you probably already know how important it is to restore normal blood flow to the brain and help prevent a possible stroke. Traditionally, this has been accomplished with the placement of a stent using an open surgical technique called a carotid endarterectomy.

However, this type of surgery comes with its own risks. Because carotid stenting from the femoral artery — which includes the use of a wire and distal protection device — can knock plaque off into the bloodstream during the procedure, this can cause a stroke as the plaque travels toward the brain. This surgery also requires extensive recovery time and includes potential nerve damage.

Mobile Vascular offers an endoscopic alternative to carotid endarterectomy that may be safer for some patients with carotid artery disease who are considered high-risk for conventional surgery.

The procedure – called transcarotid artery revascularization or TCAR – is an advanced way to deliver a stent into a blocked carotid artery.

How TCAR Works

The stent is delivered through a tube inserted in a small incision above the clavicle or collarbone. The system then temporarily reverses the blood flow, redirecting any bits of plaque away from the brain. The redirected blood then flows through the TCAR system, which filters out any plaque debris. The filtered blood is returned through a tube in the groin or thigh area.

With the carotid stent in place, the artery is reopened, restoring normal blood flow and preventing strokes.

Why choose TCAR?

The TCAR procedure accomplishes the same objectives as a traditional surgical procedure – to surgically implant a carotid stent – with significantly reduced risk of stroke during surgery.

Because the stent is delivered and placed through an endoscopic procedure, the surgery itself is much shorter and requires only a small incision. This means a much shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery time for the patient.  In addition, TCAR is a clinically-proven option for patients who are at risk with a traditional carotid endarterectomy due to age, medical condition or anatomical issues.
